DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in Michigan
Michigan has more than 840 licensed dispensaries statewide. Verify any dispensary through the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA). Licensed dispensaries guarantee lab-tested, properly labeled products that meet state safety standards. Michigan's average item price of $8.88 is the lowest in the nation — there is no reason to buy from unlicensed sources.
You must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID from any state or country. Dispensaries check ID at the door with no exceptions. There is no residency requirement — everyone is welcome.
Cash is still the safest payment method at Michigan dispensaries. While many locations accept debit cards, cash ensures a smooth transaction everywhere. ATMs are available on-site at most dispensaries, but fees can add up. Plan ahead.
Legal consumption locations include private residences (with the owner's permission), licensed consumption lounges (Hot Box Social in Hazel Park, Kalkushka in Kalkaska, Alien Cannabis Co. in Kalamazoo, and more coming in Detroit), and licensed temporary events. Full lounge guide.
If you are new to cannabis, start with a low dose: 2.5–5 mg THC for edibles, or one small puff for flower. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. Do not take more because you "don't feel anything yet" — this is the single most common mistake visitors make. Tell your budtender it is your first time and they will guide you to the right product. Keep cannabis in its original sealed packaging. When transporting in a vehicle, store it in the trunk or a locked container — not in the passenger area. At home or a rental, keep it out of reach of children and pets. Michigan law requires home storage of amounts over 2.5 oz to be in a locked container.
Approximately 74% of Michigan municipalities have opted out of allowing cannabis businesses. Dispensaries are concentrated in certain cities and towns. If you are visiting a rural area, the nearest dispensary may be in the next county. Use our dispensary directory to plan ahead.
Michigan is one of the few states with licensed consumption establishments. Hot Box Social (Hazel Park), Kalkushka (Kalkaska), and Alien Cannabis Co. (Kalamazoo) are currently operating. Detroit has authorized 35 additional licenses. These are the best option for visitors without access to private property. Full lounge guide.
Budtenders are knowledgeable professionals who can help you navigate Michigan's affordable but enormous selection. Tipping a few dollars is appreciated, especially if they spent time walking you through options as a first-timer.
DON'T: Common Mistakes That Can Get You in Trouble
Cannabis consumption is prohibited in all public places in Michigan. This is a civil infraction with a $100 fine. Public means streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches, restaurant patios, parking lots, and any place exposed to public view. "Stepping outside" or "going around the corner" is still public consumption.
Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even between Michigan and Ohio, which has also legalized. This applies to all four border states (Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota) and the Canadian border. Consume or dispose of your purchase before leaving Michigan. There are no exceptions.
Michigan shares an international border with Canada via the Ambassador Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, and Detroit–Windsor Tunnel. Even though Canada has legalized cannabis nationally, crossing with cannabis can result in criminal charges in both countries, permanent denial of entry to Canada, and vehicle seizure. Border agents actively screen for cannabis.
Airports are federal property. TSA operates under federal law, where cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance. Do not bring cannabis through security at Detroit Metro (DTW), Gerald R. Ford (GRR), or any other airport. Use it or dispose of it before your flight.
Michigan has zero-tolerance DUI for recreational cannabis users. This is stricter than most legal states: any detectable level of THC in your system while driving is a violation. There is no "legal limit" equivalent to alcohol's 0.08% BAC. Medical patients have a different standard under People v. Koon, but recreational users do not. Use rideshare after consuming. Full DUI details.
Most Michigan hotels prohibit cannabis use in rooms and on property. Violating hotel policy can result in cleaning surcharges ($200+), fines, and removal. Do not smoke or vape in hotel rooms, balconies, or common areas. Use a consumption lounge instead.
With 840+ licensed dispensaries and the lowest prices in the nation ($8.88 average per item), there is absolutely no reason to buy from unlicensed sources. Unlicensed products are not tested for pesticides, heavy metals, mold, or accurate THC labeling. Use only CRA-licensed dispensaries.
Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a serious criminal offense — a felony carrying up to 7 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Adults may purchase and possess cannabis for their own use only. If children are present, store all products securely out of their sight and reach.
Many dispensaries prohibit photography and video recording for security and customer privacy. Always ask before taking photos or video. This is both a courtesy to other customers and typically a house rule enforced by staff.
